Migration in Australia

Overseas migration has long been a major driver of Australia’s population growth, with more people typically arriving than leaving each year. This pattern briefly reversed during 2020 and 2021, when international border closures and pandemic restrictions sharply reduced movement into Australia. Migration has since rebounded, although recent trends suggest it is beginning to stabilise from post-pandemic highs.
